What is proposed?
The proposal for the solar park covers approximately 61 hectares. There will be approximately 70,000 fixed panels, set on frames in rows and will face south. The panels will be raised above the ground by around 0.5m and will have a maximum height of approximately 3 metres.
If the proposal is consented and developed, there will be a biodiversity net gain for the site, with areas for habitat enhancement including additional hedgerows.
The solar farm will have a lifetime of 40 years. There are no foundations for the solar panels and, at the end of the lifetime, the panels can be easily removed - all equipment and structures would be removed from site.
This solar farm would have a capacity of up to 48MW and have the opportunity to deliver electricity to approximately 14,000 homes.*
*Based on average UK solar PV load, 2019-2023 inclusive [DUKES, DESNZ 2024, table 6.3] and mean domestic metered consumption of 3239.5kWh/pa in 2022 [latest figures from accredited official statistics]
The proposed solar park is located on land to the south of Fillpoke Lane, and north east of Monk Hesleden, County Durham.
